Solutions to the Surveillance State (Part 3)

Turn on a Piratebox and instantly transform any space into a free and open communication and file sharing network. No surveillance. No monitoring. A completely anonymous local solution to pervasive government spying.

A PirateBox is a device that utilizes free and open source software to create wireless networks where users can anonymously chat and share images, video, audio, documents, and other digital content. Since it is not connected to the internet there is no way for centralized systems to monitor its transactions.

Internet Freedom

The internet should facilitate the free flow of information and ideas. It should be free of censorship and should facilitate privacy. The ideal internet would be free to access by anyone at any time without an ISP. Unfortunately, the internet is increasingly being used as an agent of oppression that tracks and monitors the population.

While every effort should be made to keep the present internet as open and useful as possible (see part 1 and part 2) the potential exists to think outside the box and create a radically different and more functional internet.

The technological basis to accomplish this already exists. Those interested can have a glimpse of the future (or a blast from the past, in some sense, if you can remember the net back in '98) through the use of a Piratebox.

Successful development is being done to integrate multiple Pirateboxes together on a wireless mesh-network. This enables an integrated network to form over a larger geographical area. One can envision a time when a ubiquitous decentralized pirate internet could operate in parallel to the existing net. Perhaps one day it could replace it.

Get Yours Today

The Piratebox is easy to use. It is perfect for dorms, apartments, coffee-shops, businesses, classrooms or anywhere else you can imagine where people would benefit from being able to easily collaborate and share information.

You can build your own for as little as $40. The cheapest Piratebox needs to be plugged in to a wall and has limited hard drive space. For a little more money significant hard drive space can be added as can a battery to power the unit anywhere without a cord.

We have constructed a unit for $100 that has a 32 GB hard drive and a battery that successfully powered the unit for 27 hours.

The initial setup of the Piratebox is somewhat technical but doable if you have a little free time and a little patience.

If you would like a Piratebox but don’t think you are up to making it yourself, send us an email and we will build you one at cost and to your specifications.
